Website design By BotEap.comWe were amazed that we could get such cheap beach house rentals in the Caribbean. I stayed at Banana Beach for 3 weeks for a relaxing and romantic getaway, but ended up being drawn into a lot more activities than I had planned! A great example of this was Tex-Mex barbecue.

Website design By BotEap.comThe owner, Rand, is a (former) Texan, so I wasn’t too surprised that Tex-Mex was featured so prominently on the menu at ‘The Mystic’, the resort’s bar/restaurant. Rand (who has some funny anecdotes and is inspiringly outspoken) owned a bar in Dallas, so when it comes to Tex-Mex, he knows what he’s doing. What surprised me was how damn good the food was. As much as I love Honduras and its food, the restaurants here don’t make the best variations of Mexican or Tex-Mex food. It’s often best to stick to local cuisine, seafood, and Caribbean-influenced foods. One of the problems is that for some reason Hondurans seem to name random dishes with Mexican names, so when you order an enchilada (for example), you actually get a toscada, which can be a bit disappointing.

Website design By BotEap.comBanana Beach is an exception to that, thanks both to Rand’s experience in the Dallas hospitality industry and to excellent resident chef Juergen. On the standard menu, this means that when you order food, you really know what you’re going to get! More than this, Juergen (thank goodness) avoids frying everything, which is the standard treatment of Tex Mex food in Honduras. So, as you can guess from my standard menu description, Tex Mex barbecue goes a step further.

Website design By BotEap.comAs it is a Tex Mex affair, the meat must prevail and it is scrumptious. I have no idea what Juergen uses in his sauces and marinades, it’s perfect. I also don’t know how they found well-slaughtered pork in Honduras. The pork here is usually pretty tough by North American standards, but that’s the way they like it. A little birdie told me they use Canadian pork chops which would explain it. The bean salads were another favorite. It made a nice accompaniment to the surprising amount of meat I had on my plate! In true Tex Mex style, they don’t overwhelm the meat with flavor, just a hint, that’s how I like it!

Website design By BotEap.comBesides the food, the company was also fantastic. Locals and gringos (all North Americans and Europeans are gringos in Honduras!) traveled for hours to join in on the barbecue fun. I think the fact that they actually have a full bar, which most places in Honduras don’t, plus one of the best positions on Trujillo Bay, probably helped this! After 4pm the party really started and we continued drinking, dancing and generally having a good time until quite late. I had to remind myself the next morning that Tex Mex BBQ doesn’t mean you have to drink too much tequila, no matter what Rand says!
