At the beginning of the game you will have to choose a type of character, so select the one that you think will help you the most. Bonuses later in the game and setbacks are based on the class you choose. Some people decided to get multiple accounts so they could try all the classes. The next thing would be to start doing a job that will build your mob credentials. Except for jobs, fighting in Mafia Wars is probably the most important and possibly the most difficult aspect of the entire game. When you start out, all you can do is chase away the thugs until you have enough money for a gun. Fully filling the yellow bar will unlock other jobs and a higher reward from the other. Once you progress through the levels, more cities will become available. NY won’t be the only city to do jobs. It’s a great idea to do jobs until you have no more energy. It takes a period of time for your energy to come back up when you run out. It is suggested that whenever you open another city you spend a couple of days doing jobs in that city as you will want to buy a business or two (the main way to make money besides doing jobs) because when cities are first unlocked time, money is usually hard to come by. Also, leveling up will completely fill your energy.

Depending on the defense and attack points, the game will launch an attack against your enemy. Your stock determines the amount of attack and defense you have. Leveling up will open up more equipment for you. High score wins the battle. “Stealing” lets you attempt to steal from a property, “Declare War” lets you fight mob members, and “Hitlist” features mob members that have a price on their head, giving you experience and a good chunk of money. Energy will replenish when you’re attacking mob members, so this is a way to pass the time instead of just waiting. Once you know how to pick your targets, it’s easy to win. The best way to improve your ratings and get some quick cash is by attacking other mobsters, probably throughout the game. However, choosing the wrong target will end up with a kick in the butt and your mob in the hospital.

Another great way is to go to the Mafia Wars forums and find threads where people ask allies. Don’t just spam that requires mob members, look for forum threads called “Add Me” or “Friend Requests.” You can provide your information there or add the active list. It’s a good idea to go slow when inviting friends, as adding too much too quickly will look murky on Facebook and/or Myspace. You should probably put these new “friends” on a special list so they don’t have access to all your private information that your real friends have on these social networking sites.
