Atomstack X7 Pro Laser Engraver

A good laser engraver is easy to set up, takes up little space, and can be easily upgraded for your needs. Atomstack’s X7 Pro aims to capitalize on all of these criteria with a variety of built-in safety and accessibility features. It’s also designed for quick assembly, which the company notes can be completed within ten to twenty minutes for anyone with experience setting up similar machines.

The engraver uses a proprietary laser-box board powered by an ATmega328P 8-bit microcontroller. This chip runs the motor drivers and two A4988 stepper driver sockets. It’s an older design, though most other laser boards have moved to 32-bit processors. Fortunately, it can be replaced with any A4988-compatible board if needed.

Unlike some lasers, the Atomstack engraver doesn’t use a mirror or collimator to direct the light. Instead, the laser head is positioned on top of a piece of acrylic that’s 2mm thick. The head is then lowered over the surface of the material being engraved or cut. This allows the laser to remain 2mm above the work surface and prevents burn marks on the bottom of the material.

To ensure the head stays 2mm above the engraving or cutting surface, Atomstack has included a hex key for tightening the z-axis screws to a specific torque value. This allows the user to adjust the focus of the laser without having to take it apart. The focusing procedure is quick and simple, and the head stays 2mm above the work surface when tightened properly.

The Atomstack engraver can cut a 3mm piece of black acrylic (plexi glass) at 600 mm/min in just eight passes with no warping or burning. The resulting cuts are smooth and clean with a sharp edge. It can also engrave on materials such as wood, leather, paper, cotton, fruit, foam, and black anodized aluminum.

It’s compatible with mature engraving software and CAD, CAM, and control software such as LaserGRBL and LightBurn. It can also be controlled through a 3.5″ HD touch-screen controller that’s attached magnetically to the front of the X7 Pro. The X7 Pro can be powered through USB, SD card, or via Wi-Fi for offline operation.

Atomstack’s X7 laser has an impressive list of features for a sub-$200 engraver. The build quality is solid, and the ergonomics are excellent for a desktop machine. It’s a great choice for anyone who’s looking to get into laser engraving or cutting at an affordable price.
