What is Virtual Private Network?

A virtual private network allows you the option of connecting your computers using a local area network or a wide area network. With a VPN, you can secure sensitive information while surfing on the internet. If you do not know how a VPN works, you should be aware that there are three primary ways to configure a VPN.

A basic VPN configuration will allow you to access the internet from one location with a secure connection and to connect your computers with each other using different encryption methods. A virtual private network connects users to each other over a secured connection and allows users to exchange and send information across publicly or privately networked computers as if they were directly connecting to the local computer. This can be a useful for companies that need to manage a number of remote branches. A VPN can also be useful for individuals who want the convenience and security of a private and secure internet connection but do not want to have to provide their real identity and location to internet service providers (ISPs) or other subscribers.

A VPN allows for the encryption and authentication of data and internet traffic between you and your VPN provider. Encryption is used between you and the server so that your data traffic is protected and your privacy is maintained. Authentication is used to make sure that only you and your VPN provider are able to view or read the data that has originated from your computer.

Configuring a Virtual Private Network

There are two ways to configure a VPN. You can configure it using the IP address or domain names. IP address requires that each computer on the network has its own unique IP address and domain name to allow for the encryption and authentication to take place. For this method to work effectively you will need to ensure that each client has its own IP address and that all of your internal networks use the same firewall to protect your personal data from outside sources. This prevents any possible attacks to your network and strengthens your internet security.

The second way to configure your VPN is through a domain name. A domain name is simply a string of numbers that identifies a particular internet account or computer. This is a more secure connection because it encrypts your IP address and is harder to be interrupted. However, it is also more complicated to set up and maintain than an IP address because it requires a DNS server and client updates to keep your internet security strong. It is also more difficult for you to change your domain name in the future if you wish to change your privacy settings.

Depending on your VPN provider, you may be able to choose an encryption method. Some VPN providers offer encryption using Blowfish, SSL, or IPsec. These types of encryption are based on the same methods used to secure your IP address while you are online. They differ slightly because they allow your internet traffic to pass through two different servers rather than one. The benefit of SSL or Blowfish encryption is the fact that they do not leak information about your actual IP address, but if the information were to leak, your privacy would still be greatly compromised.
