  1. Your advertisement – For your ad text, you are allowed one line of headline and two lines of ad copy below the headline. Give a lot of thought to the selection and positioning of your words. Remember, you are competing with other advertisers doing the same thing. You have to experiment with many different ads, determining which ones bring you the most converting traffic. Your ad must include the keyword or phrase that people are searching for. The search engine bolds those keywords in your ad, which draws more attention.
  2. landing page – This is the page people will land on when they click on your ad. This page could be your home page. The page must be very sales oriented and allow the visitor to find what they are looking for and communicate with you.
  3. Keywords – It is important to use as many relevant keywords and phrases that relate to your product or service. Try not to use keywords that are not relevant. It will just end up costing you money with no results.
  4. keyword types – There are three different ways to list your keywords:

    • Broad match keywords. That means any time that keyword or phrase is entered into a search phrase in any order, your ad will appear.
    • Phrase match keywords: When you put quotes around your keyword phrase, your ad will only appear if the phrase is spelled exactly as it is in the quotes.
    • Exact match keywords: if you type your keywords in parentheses []Your ads will appear when a searcher types the exact phrase in parentheses.
    • Negative keywords: You can include negative keywords under which you don’t want your ad to appear.

  1. ad positioning – You’ll want to experiment with how your ads rank for various keywords. You might think that being in the first position is what you would want every time. That can be an expensive assumption. The first position will almost always get the “auto clickers”. That means people will automatically click on it, even if it’s not what they’re looking for. Thus, you will end up paying for a lot of irrelevant clicks. Positions 3 and 4 are usually good spots, and sometimes even 5-8 are good spots. Keep in mind that if you’re in the top 4, your ad will also show with the search engine’s extended network of search engines, so you’ll get more exposure. It’s important to play around with different rankings for different keywords to determine the optimal ranking for conversions.
  2. Keyword Cleanup – You’ll want to review the performance of your keywords and remove those keywords that don’t produce results over time.
