Singing techniques, composition techniques: are good songs a thing of the past?

Website design By BotEap.comWhat do Billy Joel, Green Day, Kenny Chesney, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Journey, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Linkin Park, John Mayer and Rascal Flatts have in common?

Website design By BotEap.comGood composition is a craft and an art that requires special skills and knowledge that are learned through study, experience, failure, and success. The best composers have usually spent years honing their skill, although some seem to have a knack for it.

Website design By BotEap.comThe problem (as I see it) is that a lot of people are writing songs for their bands or themselves that just aren’t good. Writing uninteresting melodies and silly lyrics is all the rage now and has been for several years. I think the reason for this is that today’s teenagers (record buyers) are generally just as satisfied, if not more satisfied, with bad music than good music. I’m not saying that today’s youth are stupid, but that they easily settle for mediocre music.

Website design By BotEap.comOf course, good songs are being written and recorded, but too many bands and recording artists make do with a lot of smoke and hiss and too little substance. I give credit to Disney for keeping good songs in front of the kids. Too many of those young singers coming out of the Disney Channel are sub-standard, but the songs they sing are usually written by Disney’s great team of songwriters. (And modern recording techniques can usually make even a terrible singer sound like a star.)

Boy bands like N’Sync and the Backstreet Boyz are regaining popularity. Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, John Mayer, Elton John, the Beetles, Tony Bennett and Barbara Streisand enjoy continued fan support.

Website design By BotEap.comWhy is this happening? I think young people miss hearing really good songs. Their need for this has not been met for a long time and they are beginning to show their discontent with their purchases.
