Job search exploration

Website design By BotEap.comI had the privilege of seeing my son, Noah, only last night for a few hours as my wife, his mother, had to work late. Dad and son had a great time playing, crawling, and destroying everything that got in our way!

Website design By BotEap.comMy son just turned seven months yesterday, which means he’s ready to explore anything and everything. Now I’ll say that based on the websites we read, he acts like he’s 10 or 12 months old, not seven. He is able to crawl at a very high speed, stand up on anything that can support his weight, babble and try to make syllables, feed himself, etc. Since he is so interested in exploring every part of the house, I more or less allowed him to have free rein and tear apart what was never bolted.

You’d think he would play with the toys he just scattered on the floor, but no, he was already crawling to the next “play area.”

After a minute or two, all the magnets we had that he could reach were scattered all over the floor. Since magnets are no fun at all once they’re on the floor, she noticed the four liters of soda on the floor near the refrigerator. He instantly forgets about the magnets and crawls to knock over the soda bottles that were lined up so neatly against the wall.

Website design By BotEap.comThis night of exploration continued back to the living room where we found the coffee table. Now I don’t know what you have on your coffee table, but on our coffee table we have outside three TV remote controls, books, newspapers, magazines and other miscellaneous items. You’d think that since we have a seven-month-old baby, we would keep the table clear, but no, we don’t. Noah found the coffee table; He got up and began to work around the table to throw everything on the floor. Now you need to remember that you only stand six to 10 inches above the table when you are standing up and still cannot stand alone. So when he throws everything to the ground he does it with one hand because he has to use the other to support himself. It is very cute.

Needless to say, when my wife got home around 10pm, I was pretty tired, but more importantly, Noah was exhausted and sleeping. Dad had successfully tired him and put him to bed before Mom got home.

Website design By BotEap.comNow for those of you who are not yet parents, this is important. As you can see, “mommy” is often considered the one with the “touch” to put Noah or any child to sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I put Noah to bed every other night, but some nights it takes the “mommy” touch to get in and get the job done. However, on this particular night, Dad had “the touch.” My wife was quite shocked and sad at the same time, as when she got home, Noah was already in bed and she couldn’t say good night. I would assume that she thought that he would still be awake because, as you know, Mom is the only one who can really put him to sleep, right? It was a great night for me as a father, as I finally learned the art of putting my son to sleep without having to call the cavalry, my wife.

Website design By BotEap.comNow let me relate this to finding a job. As you can see from the story above, my son is very curious and explorer. He goes everywhere and anywhere to find something new to break. He is willing to search new places and crawl to new places to find something that he can put in his mouth and eventually dispose of. I think you, as a job seeker, could learn a thing or two from Noah. Are you willing to search for work all over the place or have you typecast yourself on some websites, or some contacts that you think will eventually pay off? Finding a job can be a very complicated and time-consuming process. You may need to spend a couple of minutes on an area, determine what you can get from that resource, and then move on. Put the business card in your tracking pile, and then find another resource. Don’t get stuck in the routine of job seekers always returning to the same place for help. If your local networking group isn’t paying off, go ahead. Find another. If your college career center doesn’t offer much help in the way of contacts, go ahead. Find another professional counselor. When you’re looking for a job, you can’t get bogged down with those who aren’t really interested in helping you or those who aren’t qualified to help you. If you talk to enough people, search enough websites, create an impressive resume, you will find a job. It may take time, but it will happen. Make sure you are spending your time wisely as you are unemployed and don’t have much time to waste. The longer you stay in the job seekers grind, the longer you will go without paycheck, health insurance, retirement, etc.
