Keywords: Part 1 Proper Keyword Selections

There are certain guidelines that will never change, at least not anytime soon. A successful website should be clean coded and compliant with w3c standards, have relevant keyword rich web copy and plenty of relevant one way inbound links. Good reciprocal links are a nice touch to show even more relevance.

Selecting the keywords for your site is probably the most important thing you can do for your site. Their keywords get featured to search engines and ultimately to viewers. Choose them wisely!

Website design By BotEap.comWhen choosing your keywords, stop thinking about trying to rank for what you want, and instead think like a bystander. Which keywords best show what your site is really about? An example of poor keyword selection is: For a pet retailer site, ranking for keywords dealing with pet health information without owning that information just to get extra traffic is very bad. . This deceptive traffic will load your site long enough for them to realize they were tricked and they will leave your site again.

Website design By BotEap.comIf your site is still very young or just created, you shouldn’t be looking for the keywords with the highest traffic. Yes, those keywords would be nice to have, but think logically. Can a brand new site rank above an old website for such competitive keywords? I do not think so!

Website design By BotEap.comOnce you know what kind of keywords you’re looking for, focus on the details. If you sell only blue laptop sleeves don’t go after the term laptop sleeves. With this selection, most viewers will again leave the site with only a handful of people actually wanting a blue box to turn into a sale. In cases like this, the more specific the keyword, the higher the chance of converting your viewer, and the more general the term, viewers may actually be looking for information, not buying. When dealing with your keywords, stay true to your site! As long as you stay true to the site, you should look for as many variations of the keyword as possible (I’ll cover the answer in another article on Latent Semantic Indexing, or LSI). To help you find good keywords, you can use the Overture keyword selection tool and the Google keyword selection tool.
