Start the New Year off Right and Learn to Network Effectively – Part 2

Website design By BotEap.comWHAT SHOULD NOT BE DONE ON THE NETWORK

  • Don’t try to sell to networking partners or others at networking events. You are not there to make a sale.
  • Don’t hand out your business cards to everyone present. KEEP YOUR BUSINESS CARDS TO YOURSELF. It’s the worst thing you can do at any networking event. Most people will just throw them away. Why would they want your card when you haven’t even bothered to know who they are? BIG BOO BOO!
  • Try to collect only the cards of those with whom you will be following up. Although it can’t be helped when someone hands you their card during a presentation.
  • Do not scan the room when you are talking to someone unless you explain that you are waiting for someone who you are supposed to meet there. There is nothing more insulting than talking to someone who is busy looking around the room for someone else to talk to.
  • Don’t just hang out with people you know because you already know them, but introduce them to other people so they can make new contacts as well.
  • Don’t keep talking about yourself, ask questions.
  • Don’t go to an event just to make an appearance. Plan to stay for a while. To say that you are too busy to stay implies that everyone else has nothing better to do.
  • Don’t just go to 2 or 3 events a year. You will never build relationships that way. Being PRESENT AND VISIBLE is important because it creates awareness. The higher your visibility, the more known you will become. Without visibility you cannot move to the next level of credibility.
  • You will also want to dress appropriately, the way you dress says a lot about you, business attire or business casual.

Website design By BotEap.comTIPS FOR WORKING IN A NETWORK

  • Be genuine
  • Always smiles 🙂
  • Follow up with the cards you collect
  • When you receive someone else’s card, you may want to write down what the two of you discussed to jog your memory.
  • Look people in the eye when you speak to them
  • Be prepared: practice a 45-60 second presentation on what you do
  • Focus on what the other person is saying or you may miss some important points
  • Try to listen to what your problems are; You can be a hero if you can offer advice or an introduction that can solve it.
  • Never criticize others
  • If you are attending a networking meeting or seminar rather than a welcome event, be sure to arrive early and stay late – these are the best networking opportunities.
  • Show sincere appreciation for the accomplishments of others.
  • Always be positive. Be the one to light up a room and all the conversations you participate in
  • “Praise loudly, blame quietly”
Website design By BotEap.comIt’s not always about what you know or who you know, but rather “how well you know them.” Productive networking takes time, it’s like a garden, you plant the seed, then you have to constantly water and care for it before you see the results. If you neglect it, it dies and fades away. The common denominator of networking is people. People are human and humans need time to build reports and trust. Opportunities will present themselves, you need to be there and listen. Opportunities come when you least expect them. Always be happy and enthusiastic.
