Website design By BotEap.comDriving us crazy:
A fascinating concept of Lean thinking that I have picked up in my professional career is that it is counterintuitive. In other words, the way our brain tells us that it is faster / better at doing something is often actually the opposite. Here’s an example from every day …

Website design By BotEap.comChristmas card. If we have 50 Christmas cards to write, the best way to do it is to write all the cards first, then write all the addresses on the envelopes, and then make all the stamps, right? No. Actually, it’s faster to make an entire card ready to ship at one time. Strange but true. (Since this is an environmental article, it is worth recommending that you send e-cards!).

Website design By BotEap.comYou do not believe me? There are YouTube videos of a Lean practitioner doing the experiment and you can even take the time at home to try it out.

Website design By BotEap.comOne reason it is faster is because there are fewer stops and starts that interrupt the flow, another key concept of Lean and a very relevant point of what I am about to say.

Website design By BotEap.comAnother place where we go wrong is the way we drive. We have convinced ourselves that the closer we are to the car in front, the faster we get to where we are going. This is not only wrong, but it is the cause of tons of accidents (many fatal), it causes us massive stress, countless traffic jams AND it costs us money in gasoline AND it costs the environment in gasoline emissions.

Website design By BotEap.comI tested this on myself when I bought my car, which the time I bought it 3 years ago politely informed me on the dash that it was getting 43 MPG. It was supposed to be an economy car that did much more than this, so what I did was start to allow more distance to the car in front, enough that I rarely have to brake because I’m far enough back to lift. foot on the gas means I don’t have to. MPG skyrocketed and still climbing, but is currently at 58. You don’t have to be a math whiz to figure out it’s an extra 15 MPG!

Website design By BotEap.comSaving money:
Fuel has been averaging £ 1.20 per liter since I bought it (for Diesel, slightly less for petrol at £ 1.16) and I drive approx. 25,000 miles per year on the go, so converting this to gallons saves me £ 820 a year.

Website design By BotEap.comThe average car driver drives 7,500 miles per year, saving £ 246 (£ 238 for gas). Cliché is like a huge savings to make such a small price to pay slip off my tongue here, but I’ll save you the rest!

Website design By BotEap.comEnvironmental impact:
Every year in Britain there are 108 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from road transport (311 billion miles per vehicle, see notes for equation). Therefore, on average, this could save the environment 16,623,037 tons in C02 fuel emissions per year. That’s more than 15%! All from a minor change.

Website design By BotEap.comDecrease air pollution and save ourselves and our loved ones from all the health conditions it causes, from asthma to heart disease to stunted lung growth in our children.

Website design By BotEap.comBeing the change:
Once you make this simple change, you’ll start to see how everyone drives in a different light. You will notice people speeding up to red lights and roundabouts only to have to hit the brakes. You’ll see row upon row of cars leaving very little distance, so as soon as someone interrupts, each one brakes, quickly turning into a traffic jam and even a pileup that could have so easily been avoided.

Website design By BotEap.comChanging this habit of unnecessarily breaking by driving too close can be easy when you know all of this and it DEFINITELY makes driving more enjoyable. (Obviously, if you need to brake, keep braking!)

Website design By BotEap.comIf you are like me, it will become a challenge to see how much you can increase your MPG. If you make this change, it would be nice to know how many extra MPG you get, so leave a comment.

Website design By BotEap.comIf it seems unrealistic for people to change driving habits, you should know that we have done it and it literally saves lives on the roads – statistics show that road deaths (per billion miles per vehicle) dropped from 165 in 1949 to 5.7 in 2014 for reasons including education and behavior change.

Website design By BotEap.comBe aware that you will find someone on the road to catch you because there is a gap between you and the car in front, even if you are passing cars in the slowest lane (if you are not, consider getting out of the overtaking lane). lane!) but when that happens, don’t bother, back up to put distance between you and them and be a part of driving education (excuse the pun).

Website design By BotEap.comIf you are reluctant to change, then it is too big a step. So break it down until you find a starting point that is easily achievable, like trying on a trip, or part of one, whatever you’re comfortable with that takes you to the next step and the next.

Website design By BotEap.comIf you intend to try this, tell someone and / or write it down and think about the journey you will make it for, for example tomorrow on your way to work, and you are much more likely to try.
